The Oruawairua Track on Blumine Island offers a scenic and somewhat challenging hiking experience. Here are some details about the track:

Starting Point: The Oruawairua Track begins at the Blumine Island campsite. It's essential to check the current trail conditions and any updated information at the campsite before embarking on the hike.

Terrain: While the track generally follows a gentle gradient around the hill, there are a couple of short, steep sections along the way. Hikers should be prepared for these elevation changes, so wearing appropriate footwear and bringing sufficient water is advisable.

Lookout Points: The track offers several lookout points that provide stunning views over Queen Charlotte Sound. These vantage points are perfect for taking in the beautiful natural scenery and potentially spotting wildlife.

Wildlife Viewing: Blumine Island is known for its unique and endangered wildlife. If you're lucky, you might spot rare species such as the saddleback or orange-fronted parakeet. Keep your eyes peeled for these elusive creatures during your hike.

Weta 'Motels': Along the track, you may come across weta 'motels.' These are designed to attract and provide shelter for weta, which are large, flightless insects native to New Zealand. Take a moment to check if any weta are resident in these motels during your hike.

Weka Encounters: Weka, a bird species native to New Zealand, are plentiful on Blumine Island. While they can be charming to observe, it's essential not to feed them, as this can disrupt their natural behavior. Also, be cautious about securing your lunch, as weka are known for their curiosity and can be quite bold when it comes to food.

Preparation: Before embarking on the Oruawairua Track, make sure to check local weather conditions and bring appropriate clothing and gear for the hike. Sturdy footwear, water, and perhaps some insect repellent are recommended.

Respect for Nature: When visiting Blumine Island and hiking the Oruawairua Track, it's essential to follow Leave No Trace principles. Respect the natural environment, avoid littering, and be mindful of the delicate ecosystems on the island.

This track promises not only natural beauty and panoramic views but also the chance to encounter some of New Zealand's unique and endangered wildlife. As always, be a responsible and considerate visitor to ensure the preservation of this beautiful island and its inhabitants.
