Hedgerows are the first strawberry growers in New Zealand to produce fruit, early in September. This is due to the extensive daylight hours and cool nights in the Marlborough region, and because the strawberry plants are protected from the wind, the rain and the cold, in hydroponic tables under a 5000 sq meter glasshouse. The farm is open for tourism guided visits during the harvest season from September to February, and technical visits are also available during the planting and growing phases from May to August. The Hedgerow strawberry DESIRE is marketed all over New Zealand. The shop on the farm offers fresh fruit for sale, and unique gourmet tastes using the production, including strawberry and Manuka honey balsamic vinegar, freeze dried strawberries, strawberry fudge and real fruit ice-creams and frozen yoghurt. The Hedgerows Strawberry Recipe Collection recipe book is a popular gift item. Tours and individual travelers are welcome to play a game of petanque and picnic while relaxing in the gardens. Special gourmet experiences tasting strawberries in combination with local artisan foods such as cheeses, olive oil, nuts, saffron, fruits and salads can be arranged by appointment, for small groups. On these occasions the local food artisans gather at Hedgerows to present and talk about their Marlborough grown produce. Delicious and original strawberry theme snacks are offered to the visitor as a brunch or evening cocktail. Hedgerows has a fine reputation for sweet and juicy strawberries. The owners personally escort visitors around the farm for a modest fee. The farm is open from 8.30 to 5pm every day except Sunday morning when Mary and Ian, the owners, take their fruit to the local Farmers Market. Hedgerows is an attraction on the popular LOCAL LOOP circuit that includes other gourmet and family orientated experiences in and around Blenheim. The farm is located just 10 minutes drive from Blenheim on the Old Renwick Road to Renwick, on the corner of Rene St.
