Kaipupu Point is the closest wildlife sanctuary to Picton, and is situated at the head of Picton Harbour in the Queen Charlotte Sound. The Sanctuary is an easy 15 minute boat ride from Picton, with public access via a jetty in Dolphin Bay on the west side of the island. Allow an hour and a half to leisurely stroll the circular 2.7km track while also enjoying stunning views of the Marlborough Sounds and plenty of bird watching opportunities.
Established in 2005 in conjunction with landowners Port Marlborough and the Department of Conservation, the Sanctuary is a community project. Approximately 100 volunteers work behind the scenes on pest monitoring and control, maintenance, biodiversity, management and education, it is ultimately a project developed for the community by the community. The Sanctuary was officially opened to the public on the 17th of March 2013 by Rt Hon Nick Smith, Minister of Conservation.
