Cresting the hill takes your breath away on arrival at this spectacular location. Built purely for its inspirational views, (seemingly isolated, but within minutes of Picton township).
At 180 metres above sea level (well clear of any tsunamis!!) the house is designed to take in all day sun and has 360-degree views from the Kaikoura mountains to far down the Queen Charlotte Sound. Only two other houses in the neighbourhood to share with and no more sections available to be built on.
The property is sheltered from the notorious Marlborough nor- west winds with its position on the side of Mt Freeth and is surrounded by stunning native bush which is being re established. Birdsong greets us every morning, Tuis, Wood Pigeons, Bell Birds and Weka not to mention Quail and Fantails!
The house itself was built to catch the sun and is warm in winter and cool in summer. (Passive solar design!) A large 26kw log burner is all the heating we normally use in winter but “Econoheat” heaters are installed in all the bedrooms for those chilly months as well.
The bedrooms and living areas all face north and the guest wing has an extra wide hallway with vertical windows to create an art gallery effect. It works well as the view to the south is as stunning as it is to the north.
The open plan living area incorporates a huge entertainers kitchen with spacious preparation kitchen, including two extra fridges and extra large sink. The large office and media room both open off the main living area and make entertaining a breeze.
We have catered for the outdoor living needs of both summer and winter and have a pool to the north with glass balustrade surround and a cosy wind free area at the back facing west which gets all the evening summer sun. The south side has a large concreted area and incorporated into this is a pizza oven and large macrocarpa bench.
