I’ve been involved with the Waitohi Rugby Club since my family moved to Picton when I was seven years old.
I started out playing in the junior teams and progressed through the ranks and have now been playing in premiers for 17 years.
I’m also team coach and president of the club. In small rural towns like Picton, it’s pretty hard to find people to volunteer their time and get involved with the committee.
It’s the love of the game and love of the club that keeps me coming back every year, and we always hope the younger players coming through, or past players will put their hand up to get involved.
We’re a very family oriented club, both on and off the field, with many brothers and sisters, fathers and sons and mothers and daughters playing together over the years.
Players and their families look forward to games on Saturday, it’s a chance for us all to get together, catch up, blow off some steam and have a bit of fun.
Like all grassroots sports clubs, our funding took a bit of a hit this year due to the pandemic, but we are fortunate to have some loyal sponsors who have been with us for 5 years to 10 years - some even longer.
Without the support and cash sponsorship of those businesses, including Crafar and Crouch Picton, Picton Tools & Tyres, Oxley's Bar & Kitchen, Cougar Line - Marlborough Sounds, Marlborough Tour Company, Bayleys Marlborough, Picton Waterfront Apartments, Signs Now and FreshChoice Picton, clubs like ours wouldn’t survive.
So while we can’t give our sponsors much back in return, we support them in any way we can, and encourage others to support them too.
After successfully defending the Marlborough premier club rugby title in 2019, we’re after a three-peat this year, so we’re looking forward to getting the season underway. But no pressure, we’re just going to go out there and enjoy it!
