Usually our business relies on tourists, cruise ships and visitors from around the country.
So the closure of borders and travel bans brought about a world of change that business owners like us simply could never have prepared for.
However, we’re viewing the current situation as temporary and made the decision to remain open in hopes things will bounce back over the next year or so.
In the meantime, we have been changing our stock around and looking to source more New Zealand made products that will appeal to locals and domestic tourists.
We also have a greater emphasis on fashion, clothing and jewellery and providing a great customer experience so people feel welcomed, intrigued and excited when they walk in the door.
I’d like to acknowledge and thank our staff who have been brilliant over the past few weeks and our excellent landlords for playing their part in helping us find a solution during lockdown when we had no income.
The Government wage subsidy was also a huge help, giving us some breathing room during a very uncertain time and enabling us to retain our staff.
I’d also like to thank our local customers. It’s been heartening to see so much local support for our shops since we reopened.
My hope for Marlborough is that we come out of this even more brilliant than we were before. It’s the best place on earth and we are lucky to live here.
