Millennium Art Gallery
Millennium Art Gallery

When Cressida Bishop moved to Marlborough ten years ago, the region’s art scene was “fledgling”, with a five-year-old public art gallery and a growing appetite for art. In the years since, the Millennium Public Art Gallery director has seen rapid growth, with more and more people working as artists and an increasing demand for art education. “There are a massive amount of interesting creative things going on here now, and you need to stop and take the time to see them.”

These days it’s easy to spend a day or two exploring Marlborough’s art scene, perhaps starting at the Millennium to check the curated exhibition and get information on other art venues. From there, wander past high profile public art, such as Phil Price’s 8-metre high kinetic sculpture at the edge of the Taylor River Reserve, or set out to explore the Marlborough Artists and Studios trail.

“And on Saturday mornings there’s the Artisan Market on Wynen Street, which brings in lots of our artists and potters.” Both of Cressida’s parents had fine arts degrees and she grew up in an art-influenced environment. “That’s what I’m used to. I liken it to my husband Tim who grew up on a farm -- he can deal with cattle and sheep if he needs to. I grew up knowing artists, and with my parents having exhibitions, so it’s ingrained a little bit.”

Along with its art, Cressida loves Marlborough for its weather, its myriad of walks, its world class wine and amazing local produce. “I think it’s got everything going for it as a region.”
